A multi-channel plate (MCP) is a device composed of millions of closely spaced, parallel, hollow glass channels. When an electron strikes the inside wall of a channel, secondary electrons are produced and accelerated toward the opposite wall, creating an avalanche of electrons that amplifies the initial signal. MCPs are used as electron multipliers in a variety of applications, including mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, and particle physics.
