Colposcopy: Detecting Cervical Abnormalities

Colposcopy is a procedure used to visually examine the cervix for abnormalities, often to assess precancerous or cancerous changes. During the procedure, the cervix is magnified and coated with acetic acid and Lugol’s iodine to enhance visualization of abnormal tissues. Colposcopy is often used to evaluate abnormal results from a Pap smear or to investigate cervical symptoms such as bleeding or discharge. If suspicious areas are identified, a biopsy may be performed during colposcopy to obtain tissue samples for further examination under a microscope, helping to determine the presence and severity of any abnormalities.
